the live ocean racing team IS A STELLAR LINE UP of kiwi sailors who champion action for the ocean

The AKO Foundation, established by Nicolai Tangen the founder of AKO Capital, has become increasingly concerned by the effects of the changing climate on future generations and biodiversity. Their foundational support of Live Ocean acknowledges the role that New Zealand has to play to in protecting and preserving the 4th largest ocean space in the world and the critical nexus between ocean and climate.

Forsyth Barr was Live Ocean’s first foundation partner and an integral part of Live Ocean’s formation. Forsyth Barr is a New Zealand business and now operates 23 offices across the country. Like us, they’re a local organisation with a global outlook and a belief that New Zealand has world-class talent and environment that needs supporting.

With over 75% of New Zealanders living within 10km of the coast, the Bayleys Foundation recognises the importance of protecting and restoring the ocean for future generations. As a New Zealand company with over 90 offices up and down New Zealand, supporting Live Ocean’s mission to amplify and accelerate positive action for the action was a natural fit.

The Whakatupu Aotearoa Foundation is a private philanthropic trust and strategic investor in supporting our natural environment and communities to build resilience. Founders, Ian and Wendy Kuperus, are also founders of NZ’s first Tax Pooling intermediary – Tax Management New Zealand. Innovation, leadership and collaboration are part of their DNA. As a foundation partner of Live Ocean, they see the potential to unlock capability and funding for ocean conservation here. When their people and their clients are at work, they’re helping build a better New Zealand.

Dentons Kensington Swan is committed and passionate about the ocean. Not only are their values consistent with our mission, their pro-bono support was instrumental in the foundation of Live Ocean. They continue to provide ongoing legal advice to ensure we are compliant with all relevant laws and regulations and governed in accordance with international best practice.

As sailors, their obsession with sailing connects them to the water. The ocean’s health is key to the sustainability of their business, and they endeavour to continuously improve their actions to ensure this is protected. As a global business, Doyle Sails aims to think global with their goals, but take local action to ensure their voyage impacts the local communities first, and will lead to a fairer, regenerative and sustainable business and planet.

The Finesse whānau love spending time on the water and are passionate about the health of our oceans. The Finesse Foundation, a private philanthropic trust, supports programmes that conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas and marine resources. The foundation has been established to strategically invest in programmes to help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Finesse builds deep connections with people and places, helping to create sustainable residential communities across Auckland and Waikato.

JASON SAUNDERS

SAILOR / Coach

Peter is one of New Zealand’s most accomplished sailors, a champion across all yachting genres and on a mission to champion the restoration and protection of the ocean.

Peter’s list of sailing achievements spans Olympic gold and two silver medals, nine World Championship titles (six in the 49er class) and winning America’s Cup campaigns. He says there wasn’t a ‘single moment’ when he realised he had to do something for the health of the ocean but it was more of a growing consciousness. This was fuelled by the 2017/18 Volvo Ocean Race. He firmly believes in the ability for New Zealanders to be world leaders in this space. A member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, Peter has also twice been crowned World Sailor of the Year. A cool and unruffled helmsman he demonstrates an innate understanding of wind and sea. Peter continues to strive for perfection on the racecourse, through Olympic and America’s Cup campaigns and now with SailGP, the global series raced in F50 catamarans. Along with sailing partner Blair Tuke, he’s begun a new challenge as co-CEO of the New Zealand SailGP team. With this, he has melded his passion for sailing with his determination to help safeguard the oceans and raise awareness of their importance to the health of the planet, through Live Ocean.

PETER BURLING

FOUNDER

Blair’s love of the ocean has driven both his remarkable sailing career and his environmental mission to preserve it for future generations.

With six 49er World Championship titles to his name, Olympic gold and two silver medals, Blair has never been afraid to step out of a 49er skiff and into new and challenging sailing environments. He’s sailed around the globe, finishing second in a down-to-the-wire finish in the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race on MAPFRE. And he’s twice won the America’s Cup, as the flight controller on Emirates Team New Zealand’s revolutionary foiling catamaran in Bermuda in 2017 and defending the Cup on home waters in New Zealand in 2021. In 2021 he has taken a new tack, leading the New Zealand team as joint CEO with long time sailing partner Peter Burling in SailGP, the global league raced in F50 catamarans. They have also won another silver medal for Aotearoa at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. A Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, and World Sailor of the Year, Blair is also committed to the ocean conservation charity Live Ocean he’s founded with Peter. As a keen freediver and surfer, Blair has always put the ocean first. He’s only too well aware how much it has given him and understands the importance of protecting and restoring the ocean for future generations.
